Jacob Thomas recently illustrated one of those amazingly cinematic true tales for Outside Magazine. The story is about Colton Harris-Moore, an 18 year old who (among many things) stole three planes, crash-landed them and, most importantly, WALKED AWAY. The fact that he's been living in the woods and eluding the police ever since has made him a cult hero of sorts.

"At first the image was just Colt taking the controls of a plane, but when the art director asked me to make it more "outdoorsy," I thought about smashing in the windows with trees. She let me do it so I went completely action-movie-overboard with it... I had a blast!"

"The second illustration shows Colt being elusive- they call him the barefoot bandit, as he apparently prefers to perform these thefts shoeless. And since he seemed to just disappear into thin air, I thought it would be funny to have him duck behind a tree that was obviously too small for him to hide behind and let him disappear. The plane crash in the background gave me an opportunity to add some nice bright red to the scene."
