JING JING TSONG: THE BURDEN OF A SECOND LANGUAGE
March 12, 2010

Jing Jing Tsong created this image for the March issue of The Progressive for an article on combating the slurs against Spanish-speaking students.

Jing Jing Tsong: Bilingual Issues

The topic really resonates with Jing: “I grew up in a household where both parents mixed up Chinese, Taiwanese and Japanese. Then as a child spent time in Germany where I had passable fluency but then studied Spanish in high school. Everything is mixed up in my head and I am embarrassed to admit that I am monolingual.

“It's weird to think that there are people who still believe that in the US you should only speak ‘American’. And that the ability to jump from language to language can be seen as a ‘disadvantage’. After all, we are global citizens.”
