RICHARD BORNEMANN: WIRED MAGAZINE
September 14, 2010

Wired magazine commissioned Richard Bornemann to illustrate the inner workings of an advanced airport security device, capable of detecting explosives hidden within clothing. The illustration needed to inform, but could not reveal proprietary company information.

Bornemann brings his technical background to the project and researches the inner workings of the scanner using engineering drawings. He reveals different subsystems inside the machine by using fade out cutaways and zoomed in close-ups.

Coordination of reviews was complex, involving four levels of approval: marketing, Wired magazine, engineering, and a PR consulting firm.

The final feature illustration manages to reveal the inner workings of the device and show the reader how the technology works, while preserving the proprietary nature of the technology used.
