Edward Kinsella is understandably thrilled by his first book cover job, “Wooden Bones,” from Simon and Schuster. As the author, Scott William Carter, puts it, the book is “the untold story of Pinocchio, with a dark twist. Pino, as he’s come to be known after he became a real boy, has discovered that he has the power to bring puppets to life himself . . .”

Below are some of Edwards thumbnail sketches for the job. “The sketch process was a breeze because of all the fun elements I had to work with,” he says. “The most exciting part was figuring out how a puppet-turned-boy might look.”
