Sandy Haight brought her skills as an artist and calligrapher to a global level when she teamed up with a designer in Germany to work on an illustrated logo / identity for a client in Montreal, Quebec, Canada. The final artwork would be used as a logo on the web, stationary, business cards and in-office product by the end client, Dr. Sandra McGill, a plastic surgeon.

Dr. McGill felt an affinity for Nike, the Winged Victory statue at the Louvre in Paris, France. She also wanted to consider a single torso, and an overlapping group of three torsos as graphic alternatives. Sandy’s sketches are below.

With the decision made to focus on the entire Winged Victory figure, Sandy refined the image further for use as a logo by exploring various painting techniques. The client also wanted to consider adding a head or part of one to reflect the part of her work on faces.

Below, the final selected icon: Watercolor toned line on Arches cold press paper. By facing the figure right, Sandy was able to calligraphically work Dr. McGill’s initials into the rolling texture of the wing edge.
