STEVEN SALERNO: SUMMER READING

May 21, 2012

Steven Salerno created this charming ink and wash illustration in near-record time for the Chicago Tribune Sunday Magazine Summer Reading feature.

Steven’s rough sketch was done with pencil and pen, purposely giving it a turn-of-the-last-century feel, nicely supported by the sailboat luffing in the background.

A second sketch refines the figures’ position and creates a more park like setting; a rich golden tone was scanned into the background.

The final image is a full, busy composition that still manages to feel airy and contemplative, thanks to Steven’s deft line work and minimal use of color.
