ALEX NABAUM: THE EVOLUTION OF CHINA?

February 5, 2013

Alex Nabaum’s uncommissioned illustration, “The Evolution of China,” was selected for inclusion in last year’s 54th Annual of American Illustration from the Society of Illustrators.  The book was printed in China and when it arrived on American shores, the page that was to contain Alex’s image was blank: Chinese government censors deemed the image to be “disrespectful to Mao Zedong.”

The Society of Illustrators does not censor, nor do they accept it: “We fought the removal of this illustration and ultimately decided to right this wrong. Alex’s image has been added by a second printer from Hong Kong. We apologize for the delay in production of Illustrators 54 but are proud we took a stance in the name of free speech and illustration.”
