TIM O’BRIEN: SPORTS ILLUSTRATED COVER

Tim O’Brien was commissioned by Sports Illustrated to paint the new (and suddenly famous) NBA commissioner Adam Silver, for their cover. Silver was thrown into the public consciousness by handing down a harsh, but widely supported, sentence to team owner Donald Sterling for making racist remarks.

“Up close are a million brushstrokes,” says Tim. “From observations of the work of Paul Cadmus, George Tooker and Gottfried Helnwein, I saw that brushwork left untouched can both optically mix areas AND create a surface that can be understood like a topographic map.”
