JAMES FRYER ILLUSTRATION: LIFE AFTER LOSS

July 29, 2015

James Fryer’s sensitive illustration accompanied an opinion piece for the Times Higher Education magazine describing the sudden death of a husband, and its impact on his widow. She had to develop a “new normal” to manage the demands of her academic work, while also looking after her children.

“One quote from the woman really stood out,” muses James. “It is tempting to live half a life when your other half dies. Instead, I try to live twice as much, for the life my husband lost and for myself. This quote helped with the concept for the illustration.”
