CHRIS WHETZEL ILLUSTRATION: TIGER MANDINGO TRIAL

February 5, 2016

Chris Whetzel was commissioned by Buzzfeed to create imaginary courtroom-style illustrations to accompany an article about Michael “Tiger Mandingo” Johnson, who was convicted of knowingly infecting sexual partners with AIDS. The art director requested the look of Chris’s non-digital sketchbooks.

“We settled on the grayscale ink wash approach for the court images,” says Chris. “We also decided that a montage setup would work best for fitting in the cast of characters, and it echoed the randomness of my sketchbook pages.”

I was very lucky that an AD whom I had worked with at several publications was a fan of my sketchbook as well as my digital work; he had passed along some saved jpegs to another AD when this project came up. It was VERY fun to work on these images in a non-digital method!

The Ad sent over these pages from my sketchbook blog posts as a starting point. We settled on the grayscale ink wash approach for the court images. We also decided that a montage setup would work best for fitting in the cast of characters, and it echoed the randomness of my sketchbook pages.
