JAMES FRYER ILLUSTRATION: HOUSE & HOME

November 20, 2017

James Fryer is a regular contributor to the Financial Times “House & Home” section, illustrating various issues in their “UK Property and the Law” feature. Here are a few recent questions posed by readers: Can you make a claim against a friend’s 5 year old child who smashes one of your expensive Imperial Ming vases?

I've broken ties with my daughter and don't want her to be able to contest my will when I'm gone. I don't want her to get hold of our holiday home which I intend to leave to a charity. Is there anything that can be done to stop family relations’ contesting wills when a person dies?

My neighbor’s extension is vastly different from the drawings he showed me. I now have a monstrosity of an extension which is right on my boundary. Can anything be done to change things?

And finally, a word of caution: Check your broadband coverage before you move to the country - it could be slower than you think and affect your business from home.
