GIULIO BONASERA ILLUSTRATION: MENTAL EDGE

September 12, 2017

Giulio Bonasera shares an unpublished series of animal-based conceptual illustrations, originally created for Tennis Magazine. The images were designed to accompany tips on how to step up your psychological game.

1. How to Finish Without Failing - Never be satisfied with a lead, no matter how great. Keep working to open a wider and wider gap between you and your opponent. If you do, the probabilities of a victory are well in your favor.

2. Playing Matches Like Practice -  Since you are not a pro and may be a bit of a worrier, you can focus on having a bit of fun rather than strictly on whether you are going to win or lose. This is relaxing.

3. A Rule That’s Worth Gold - The great champions are better able to keep their interests in mind. You will very rarely see the likes of Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal or Maria Sharapova lose it on court. We become emotional during play and our emotions overpower our logic systems, and we do things we shouldn’t. Keep calm and test any action before taking it with the simple question, “Will this help me win?

4. Rituals That Beat Stress - Tennis matches are often stressful. We all want to win, but the outcome is uncertain. So how can you calm down? Here’s a one-word answer: rituals.

5. Small Points, Big Wins - Forget about the big points and go hard after the little points in order to give yourself multiple opportunities at the big points.
