MELINDA BECK FOR THE USPS

November 3, 2021

Melinda Beck created a collection of stamps for the United States Postal Office, to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the passage of Title IX. These stamps will be out in 2022! Title IX is the civil rights law prohibiting discrimination on the basis of sex in any educational program or activity receiving federal financial assistance. Applied at educational institutions over a wide range of programs, its most visible impact has been on school athletics.

"As a mother of two student athletes I have seen firsthand all of the work that my daughters and their teammates have put into athletics—the countless weekends and evenings spent at practices and races, the injuries, and the wins and losses," says Melinda. "I want athletes, their families, and coaches to feel pride in what they have accomplished."

"The women on the four stamps represent female athletes, specifically a runner, a swimmer, a gymnast, and a soccer player. I have included details that give each athlete their own personality and reflect the diversity of women in sports 50 years after the passage of Title IX."
