STEVEN SALERNO FOR VIKING PRESS

An ongoing unique project for Steven Salerno in 2020 through 2022 is illustrating a series of 5 new picture books & board books for MADELINE, one of the most beloved characters in children’s picture book literature. 

 For this project the publisher required Steven to create the new illustrations by emulating the recognizable illustration style of the originator of the MADELINE stories, author/illustrator Ludwig Bemelmans (born 1898 - died 1962). Steven's career has never been about mimicking another artist’s style, however in this instance he accepted the project - to act as artistic guardian of the Madeline character/brand, and to pay homage to Ludwig Bemelmans, whose illustrations Steven has always admired.

Here are some of the completed new illustrations by Steven from the first two books in the series, Love from Madeline and Madeline’s ABC’s, both slated for release in 2022.
