CATHY HULL: THE ELEPHANTS IN THE ROOM

Cathy Hull calls out Justices Samuel Alito, Amy Coney Barrett, Brett Kavanaugh, Neil Gorsuch, and Clarence Thomas, who said under oath when seeking confirmation they considered Roe v. Wade settled law and had no agenda to challenge it. Alito’s leaked draft opinion proved otherwise.

The same conservative lawmakers who decry the taking of a “fetal life” have opposed critically needed funding for child care and at-risk families, vigorously demanded personal freedom not to get vaccinated or wear masks, have no empathy for women — particularly poor, black, and brown—and no respect for their right to privacy and choice. Bodily autonomy is a fundamental human right and liberty to make decisions over one's own life and future without fear, violence, coercion, criminalization or gender discrimination. Legal bans and restric­tions that remove women’s ability to make informed choices and control their own bodies ignores the devastating consequences on opportunities in the workplace, discounts ensuing economic burdens and the potential damage to the physical and mental health of mother and child. That is an abortion.
