NEIL WEBB FOR THE NEW YORK TIMES

August 22, 2023

Neil Webb shares a recent illustration for The New York Times, accompanying a fascinating article by the English tenor, Ian Bostridge. The article is a self-reflective narrative about identity and identification with the character, the lyrics and the audience.

"Each time we stand up on stage to deliver the performance of a text - literary or musical or some combination of the two - we have a decision to make about the character of that text and about the stance we adopt towards it... Do we take on the identity of the text we have absorbed, or does the text reconfigure itself as it is moulded to the identity of the performer? What duty do we owe to the text? To the audience? To our selves?"
