JAMES FRYER ILLUSTRATES A BEACON OF HOPE

November 19, 2019

James Fryer created two illustrations for TES magazine, to accompany an article about ESOL (English for Speakers of Other Languages) programs designed to help adult refugees start a new life in the UK. With growing numbers of younger teenaged refugees entering the UK, a college in Scotland now offers a tailored ESOL course for 16-20 year olds that would better suit younger refugees traumatized by the experience of displacement.

"The lead illustration is a lighthouse as a beacon of hope for the refugees," says James, "While the cross beams in the dusk blue sky actually becomes the Scottish flag. The second illustration is a 'helping hands' pathways which symbolize tailoring help to varying circumstances."
