TIME 100 WOMEN OF THE YEAR

March 5, 2020

TIME Magazine has unveiled their 100 Women of the Year project, spotlighting influential women who were often overshadowed throughout history by their male colleagues and counterparts. This includes world leaders as well as women who found their influence through activism or culture. To recognize these women, the editors commissioned a series of new TIME covers, three of which were illustrated by members of Theispot.

Jason Seiler created a portrait of Judith Heumann, who founded her own disability-rights group in 1970 and became an advocate for the independent-living movement, laying the groundwork for the Americans with Disabilities Act.

Nigel Buchanan illustrated Françoise Barré-Sinoussi, who in 1983 played a pivotal role in identifying the human immunodeficiency virus, or HIV, responsible for AIDS.

Tim O'Brien painted Ellen Johnson Sirleaf, who ran for President of Liberia in 2006 and won on a platform of fixing the 14 year mess of civil war and corruption that the men before her had created. She was lauded as the first woman to be elected head of state in a modern African country.
