JAMES FRYER ILLUSTRATES THE OPEN ACCESS ISSUE

April 9, 2020

James Fryer's latest opinion illustration for the Times Higher Education magazine accompanied an article on the never-ending battle of "open access." The in-fighting between scholars, libraries, funding organisations and publishers could actually have a detrimental effect on science research, with scholars holding back their results while waiting for the best deal they can achieve.

"The writer of the piece wanted a negative concept showing that open access could actually backfire from what it was initially intended for. A door (open access) trampling or flattening a person opening it was mentioned by the art director," says James. "I took it a step further with the person opening the door and falling through, with the door, into a void."
