JAMES FRYER FOR EDUCATION NEXT

James Fryer's double page spread illustration for Education Next magazine accompanied the feature, "From zero-sum to positive sum," which questions the current education system where some students succeed at the expense of others. This learning model is an outgrowth of a dangerous zero-sum mindset that creates winners and losers among students before they turn 18, causing society to miss out on unique talent that could have been developed.

 

 

A better alternative is reinventing school culture as a whole and reorienting it toward a mastery-based, positive-sum system that will allow students to embrace their strengths and flourish. Rather than many people fighting over a smaller pie, the ideal system is one in which the pie grows larger as individuals achieve success, which James insightfully conveys with his deliciously detailed, enaging illustration.
