JAMES FRYER ROLLS OUT THE COVER FOR MEED BUSINESS REVIEW

James Fryer's cover illustration for MEED Business Review focused on the Middle East as a global sporting venue, newly confirmed by The Fifa World Cup in Qatar. Over the past two decades, the Pan-Arab region has spent billions of dollars on infrastructure for sporting events including athletics, golf, motorsports, winter sports, boxing, swimming, football, cricket and an old local favorite, horse racing, "The Sport of Kings."  

 "This was a very tricky cover to conceptualize and the client definitely wanted to stay away from cliches like running up a pyramid, skiing in sand etc. " says James. "I finally came up with the idea of using green, black, red and white, the Pan-Arab flag colors, as surfaces for different sports." The client agreed, and eventually approved the rolling carpet concept from James' extensive series of roughs, shown below.

"And so began the lengthy process of choosing many different sports, finding action poses for those sports, composing them on the cover, and then finally rendering approximately 40 different sporting characters," recalls James. "The client was extremely pleased with the final illustration!"
