THEISPOT INTERVIEWS ALESSANDRA SCANDELLA

May 10, 2023

Alessandra Scandella is an illustrator based in Milan. This summer, her work will be displayed in an open-air museum exhibition in the lakeshore village of Solto Collina. Alessandra chose to illustrate her interview with banners from the show.

How would you describe your art style?

My art style is watercolor and ink on cotton paper, sometimes using japanese brushes. I prepare before several sketches on paper, then I do the sketch on cotton paper and begincoloring, using more levels of trasparent watercolor brushes, beginning with the entire surface and then with the details, and generally beginning eith clear colors and then with dark colors.

Share a favorite project and tell us about it.

I’m recently preparing several illustration that will be printed in big size for posters that will appear in Solto Collina, a village on the Lake Iseo, it will be part on a big project for the culture year. In Italy each year we have a city that represents Italy for culture; this year, 2023, it is Bergamo and Brescia, and Solto Collina is part if this project. I’m really excited for this project!

Which artists inspire you and why?

I really love artists such as Modigliani, Turner, Cezanne, Schiele, Hiroshige, Utamaro and Hokusai, and for illustrators: Mattotti, Gruau, Gustavson, Pratt, Pericoli.

Other than illustration, what job would you like to do for one day?

Gardener!
