THEISPOT INTERVIEWS ANTONY HARE

May 23, 2023

Antony Hare is a visual thinker and digital maker with twenty plus years experience who trades in illustration and art direction. He delivers high-quality art assets to individuals, agencies, publishers, and brands for animation, publishing, and packaging.

How would you describe your art style?

My art style is best described as elegant. I'm anti-perfectionist, and generally completely average when it comes to day-to-day affairs. Having said that, I insist that my work is done with great care. And for me, that great care results in something people call clean and elegant.

Share a favorite project and tell us about it.

Probably my favorite project was the cup I designed, illustrated, and lettered for Chipotle. It was a well-managed project by CAA and there was lots of creative freedom and trust, constrained by the realities of a fountain-pop cup.

Which artists inspire you and why?

When I was younger, I was enamoured of clean, line-based illustrators. It seemed not only the most impressive, but also the style that spoke to me the most clearly. I decided to become an illustrator based on my admiration of Al Hirschfeld's portrait work. David Levine, Jack Davis, Mort Drucker, and so many other artists that kept me going. There are countless forgotten illustrators that are literally in my blind spot, forgotten again. I'm drawn to minimalism, but especially when it comes to line.

Name a bucket list item.

Illustrating a major ad campaign for McDonald's or Coca-Cola.

Other than illustration, what job would you like to do for one day?

Butcher.
