THEISPOT INTERVIEWS CHIARA VERCESI

May 17, 2023

Chiara Vercesi is an Italian illustrator currently based in Amsterdam, recognized for her vibrant style rich in textures and atmospheric brush strokes.

How would you describe your art style?

An endless search for balance between freedom and structure, research and creativity, storytelling and atmosphere.

Share a favorite project and tell us about it.

One of my favorite projects is "The Price of Extinction," a big illustrated fundraising campaign made for the Lincoln Park Zoo in Chicago, whose profits were distributed among various conservation associations around the world.

The subject matter is very dear to me, and the team of creatives at BBDO was absolutely awesome and a delight to work with. And just as a cherry on top, this project won me the Professional Advertising Catergory prize at the World Illustration Awards and was juried into The Society of Illustrators exhibition in New York City. What more could I have asked for?

Which artists inspire you and why?

Lorenzo Mattotti's illustrations have been my high school crush and will always hold a special place in my heart. I have yet to find someone else mastering color as he does.

Malevich, for his research on abstraction and the purity of form.

De Lempicka, for her majestic figures and volumes and her smokey/noir atmospheres.

Name a bucket list item.

Learn how to paint with both hands!

Other than illustration, what job would you like to do for one day?

Just one?

I have a million!

Writer, mathematician, chemist, sculptor, farmer... If I could, I'd live a million different lives...
