THEISPOT INTERVIEWS CHRISTINA BAERISWYL

May 24, 2023

Christina Baeriswyl is an illustrator living and working in Zurich, Switzerland.

How would you describe your art style?

I have a reduced, graphic style that is meant to bring the idea of the image to the forefront.

Share a favorite project and tell us about it.

This is a relatively recent assignment for The Spectator. It is a revolver loaded with Fentanyl tablets, illustrating an article about O.D.s, which have increased extremely due to the opiod epidemic caused from the pharama industry. From a European perspective, the revolver is a symbol of the wild west and the absurdity of American gun laws.

Which artists inspire you and why?

Felix Vallotton the Swiss-French painter from the beginning of the 20th century. I know his paintings since childhood and I feel at home in his landscapes and worlds. I think that has influenced me the most of all.

Then of course there are countless other artists who inspire me every day. Musicians, poets, writers, comedians, painters, artists, sculptors.

Name a bucket list item.

Visiting Tokyo and Japan.

Other than illustration, what job would you like to do for one day?

Something crafty. I would like to learn goldsmithing.
