THEISPOT INTERVIEWS EGLE PLYTNIKAITE

May 10, 2023

Egle Plytnikaite is a freelance illustrator and creative based in Vilnius, Lithuania. She works on a range of social, editorial and commercial projects for a diverse roster of clients, including The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, Scientific American, The Guardian, Die Zeit, The United Nations, Harper’s Bazaar, Bank of America, Monocle and many others.

How would you describe your art style?

My art style is minimal, colorful, and conceptually driven. I often incorporate subtle textures that give my work a vintage warmth while maintaining a contemporary aesthetic.

Share a favorite project and tell us about it.

Oh, that's a tough one! I've been fortunate enough to work on several fantastic commissions over the past few years, so it's hard to choose just one favorite. However, if I had to narrow it down, I would say that creating the cover illustration for The Guardian was an exceptional project for me. It was an honor to create an illustration about Ukrainian resistance and their fight for freedom, as it's a cause that I genuinely care about.

Another amazing project was designing the packaging for a clean candle company called Siblings. They wanted a warm, vintage winter feel, and I really enjoyed working on the visual.

Finally, the "Better Money Habits" campaign for Bank of America was probably the most challenging project I've worked on, but also the most rewarding. It required me to make smart, minimalistic visual decisions that conveyed complex messages. I loved distilling these concepts to their essence and communicating everything in a boldly minimalistic way. This project even won a gold ADDY from the American Advertising Federation for the "Elements of Advertising Illustration Series," which was really exciting!

Which artists inspire you and why?

There are so many artists that inspire me, but one that stands out is Javier Jaen. I'm constantly blown away by the depth and originality of his concepts. He has a way of distilling complex ideas into simple, powerful visuals that leave a lasting impression.

Name a bucket list item.

One item on my bucket list is to create art that inspires people to live more sustainably and to care more about nature and biodiversity protection. It's really important to me, and I believe that art has the power to move people in a way that few other things can.

Other than illustration, what job would you like to do for one day?

If I had to choose another profession to try for a day, I would love to be a conservation scientist. I'm passionate about protecting natural habitats and biodiversity, and I've been fortunate enough to do some volunteering work in this area with the Ancient Woods Foundation. It would be really interesting to see what it's like to work in this field on a more full-time basis.
