THEISPOT INTERVIEWS XIAOJIE LIU

May 22, 2023

Xiaojie Liu is an award-winning illustrator whose clients include Lyft (Nice Ride), McDonald's, Macmillan, Editions Auzou, Grazia, Phoenix Publishing and Media Inc, LinkNYC, and Propublica. Her latest picture books, Metaverse and Computer Chips will be published in 2023.

How would you describe your art style?
I like flat big blocks of color with lines. I love bright color combinations. I also like to draw subjects that have life, such as drawing people, animals and plants.
Share a favorite project and tell us about it.
I recently drew a picture of a silk scarf for Hearts & Science company. I used Tujia elements in it, and I drew the totem of Tujia - the white tiger, surrounded by dense native plants. I also added patterns of Tujia fabrics.
Which artists inspire you and why?
I have liked a Taiwanese illustrator since I was a child, his name is Jimmy. His style is very childlike, and he can write as well as draw. I bought many picture books published by him, and I embarked on the road of becoming a professional illustrator because of him.
Other than illustration, what job would you like to do for one day?
I would love to be a college teacher because I love teaching people and it gives me a sense of fulfillment. At the same time, in the free environment of the university, I can also continue my illustration creation.
